Hello from Geauga County Amish Country
February 1, 2018 by Sara Miller

Monday, Jan. 29 has been a beautiful day.

Monday, Jan. 29 has been a beautiful day. Temperature was at 51 degrees, which seemed good after the very cold weather we’ve been having.

Almost a month gone of 2018 and it seems long since writing a letter for the Maple Leaf.

The evening of Jan. 28, daughter Sylvia, Dan and two sons, son Richard and Sue and children, son Joe and Saloma and I went to church at Philip and Martha Miller’s on Rockwood Road.

The evening of Jan. 26, daughter Sylvia and Dan sponsored a birthday bash for me. All the marrieds were there except Philips and daughter Betty’s family from Michigan. Also, there were many of the married grandchildren. Thank you all. We had cake and ice cream and all the works, plus many beautiful gifts.

Coming from Mio, Mich., on Jan. 21 were sister Liz Yoder, two daughters and two sons, sister Clara and Eli Kauffman and two sons. Sister Sylvia and Albert Miller had been down to visit Albert’s sister Elizabeth and Allen Miller, who is not feeling well. They and Joey and Betz came down from Mio, Mich., on Jan. 18. They all then attended the funeral on Jan. 22 of Clarence Bender. He died the evening of Jan. 19. Also coming for the funeral were brother Melvin and Mattie Hershberger and sister Emma and Andy Weaver from Jasper, N.Y. They all returned home Monday after the funeral. My visitor on Sunday evening was sister Liz. Her husband passed away two years ago.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rudy Detweiler family after hearing he’s not feeling well. Also, thoughts and prayers to the Owen and Cindy Miller family, as Cindy is to have surgery on Jan. 30 on her colon. We wish better health for both.

Before we know it sugaring will start. Maybe even now the guys are getting ready. That always seems like spring isn’t far off. Bring it on!

Visitors at Richard Miller’s the evening of Jan. 28 were Perry, Katie Ann and David Miller, Melvin and Saloma Hershberger and I. It was a nice evening visiting and having snacks.

My company left the afternoon of Jan. 29. They were some of the church ladies coming for my birthday. Coming were Betty Yoder, Kathryn Byler, Barbara Miller, Freida Bender, Kathryn Yoder, Betty Byler, Linda Miller, Barbara Schlabach, Sue Miller and daughter Sylvia. They brought an ice cream cake, coffee and lots of other snacks. It was a very enjoyable morning.

My sister Elmina fell when stepping off a stepladder, breaking a small bone on her knee. She is staying at her son Edward and Edna Bender’s in Parkman for the time being. Mail will reach her at 16059 McCall Road, Garrettsville, OH 44231, in case anyone would care to send her a card.

Chuckle

An airline pilot on one particular flight had hammered his plane into the runway pretty hard upon landing. The airline had a policy, which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile and give them a “thanks for flying our airline.” Thinking someone would have a smart comment on his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the face. He gave a sigh of relief when everyone had finally gotten off except for one last little old lady walking with a cane.

She said, “Sonny, mind if I ask you a question?”

“Why no, ma’am,” said the pilot. “What is it?”

The little lady said, “Did we land or were we shot down?”

Why?

Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the post office? What are we supposed to do? Write to these men? Why don’t they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen could look for them while they deliver the mail? Or, better yet, arrest them while they are taking their pictures!

Thought for the Day

To handle a hard situation, try a soft answer.

Home is the haven you don’t find anywhere else.

You all have a good week.
