West G Athletics Celebrated

The Pizza Hut located in Chester Township has gotten some new decorative pieces in the form of West Geauga athletics memorabilia. Jerseys and photos from a variety of West Geauga athletic teams are now featured prominently on the walls.

Athletic Director Tim Skoczen said, “Having our items on display at this popular Pizza Hut location will allow current and past West G student-athletes to feel a sense of pride when they go into Pizza Hut and see West G memorabilia. I’m hoping it inspires a whole new generation of student-athletes as they join our programs.”

Football Players Enjoy Elite Bus Tour

The new head football coach for West Geauga High School, Eric Adam Sopkovich, is already showcasing Wolverine talent.Recently, he took students with him on an elite bus tour to several universities to prepare them for recruiting in the fall.

Coach Sopkovich said, “I had four student athletes go and we visited five campuses. Justin Renner and Zach Slapnicker both gained valuable experience and are being recruited by several Division 1 schools. Gino Fornaro and Klevi Rybak were evaluated by Division 3 schools.”

The group attended workouts at Penn State, University of Pittsburgh, West Virginia University, Ohio State University and Michigan State University.

At the Ohio State camp, Justin Renner was chosen to do a personal elite workout, where he was one of 20 receivers chosen to be evaluated.

Sopkovich commented, “These four athletes will be bringing college scouts out to our games this season.”

West G Weather Cam

Over the last year, West Geauga High School’s Fox 8 Weather Cam has become a regular part of Cleveland area television broadcasts.

Originally, the weather camera was located in a place where trees partially blocked the view of the sky.  André Bernier, the lead meteorologistfor WJW-TV FOX 8, noticed that the western view from the high school offered a better meteorological perspective.

Said Bernier, “I decided to reach out to the high school Principal Jay Bishop to see if relocating that camera on the high school roof was something West Geauga would entertain and something in which the school was interested.  Mr. Bishop was quick to respond.  After a couple of summer meetings, a suitable spot was located.”

The camera has become a source of information for the community and for the Fox 8 weather team.

Bernier said, “It’s one of my favorite ‘go to’ web cameras to use to highlight our beautiful Northeast Ohio sunsets and to also show the fickle lake effect snow bands that visit the snow belt.”
