Geauga Parks Binocular Program

A recent program presented by the Geauga Park Service provided free binoculars to students at Westwood Elementary School.

During the classroom training, naturalists taught students the parts of binoculars, how to use them and adjust them.

The Geauga Park District (GPD) has hosted the program for the past 17 years. It receives donations for all fifth-graders to have a pair of binoculars of their own once they graduate from the GPD led program.

The program is just the first step in helping students to prepare for outdoor learning during the school year and is a key part of the science and ecosystem studies portion of the district curriculum.

Thomas Edison STEM Award

The West Geauga School district has won the Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM education.

To receive the award, school districts sponsor a science fair, have at least one student qualify for the Thomas Edison Academy Science Day, host field trips to outside locations, such as visits to museums, or have students participate in mentoring programs.

West Geauga teachers Alan Duncan, Kristin Gregory, Sandy Kulp, Aly Ledman, Stephanie Meyer, Scott Raines, Mike Sustin and Mike Taurasi workedto achieve this award.

Freshman Heads to States

Rylie Hanford has had a successful freshman year of tennis. She was undefeated in the regular season (11-0) and at the CVC Tournament.

Rylie was chosen by area coaches as the number two seed of the tournament. She qualified for districts by winning her first three matches at sectionals against girls from Lake Catholic, Hawken and Edgewood high schools.

On the second day of sectionals, Rylie defeated the number three seed from Hawken, Stephanie Shulman, and the number one seed, Orange’s Blessing Nwaozuzu, in a hard fought three set match to earn the number one seed headed into the district tournament.

At districts, she defeated Lauryn Leslie from Fairview High School and Destiny Winans from Canton South High School. In the district championships, Rylie defeated Rachel Buchinski, of Laurel High School, 7-6, 6-1. After a challenging final match, Rylie won the Northeast Ohio District Championship and earned the number one seed headed into the state championship.
