Geauga Beef and Swine

Geauga Beef and Swine had a meeting on Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. It was Super Bowl Sunday, so during role call everyone stated whom he or she wanted to win.

Four members gave reports on a topic related to their 4-H project. After reports, members learned about swine breeds, beef breeds, tips to keep animals warm in the winter, tips for raising meat birds, how to select pigs for a 4-H project and about passion in one’s life and 4-H project.

The club will be competing in the Geauga County Window Display Contest March 3-9 to promote the 4-H program. The display will be at Mapledale Farm in Hambden Township.

Feathers and Fleece

Last year, many members of Feathers and Fleece went to the Maplewood nursing home at Heather Hill in Munson Township. Members brought along their rabbits for the elderly residents to pet and enjoy. They really appreciated the rabbits, the company and the conversations with club members. It brought a lot of joy to the residents and brightened their day.

“We also went to the Brooks home in Burton. When we walked in the room, there were about 14 elderly people. It was warm inside. First, we put towels down on tables. Then we set our rabbits down and waited for people to come by. The people would say things like, ‘can I pet her?’ And, ‘She’s so pretty.’ Or, they would ask questions like, ‘What kind of rabbit is she?’ There were a few people who told me that they had owned rabbits at one point, and they told me stories and shred advice. One man, said ‘It’s so soft you should make it into a hat.’ We all laughed. Some people stayed at the table longer than others, but my favorite part was that every person that came around smiled. And it made me happy that I could help make someone else happy. I would recommend talking to Mr. Brugger and possibly going next time we do something.” (Submitted by Andy Cohn and Julia Suvak, news reporters)
