National Merit Finalist

Chardon High School senior Isabelle Lemaster was named a National Merit Finalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Each year, about 1.6 million students take the PSAT. Of the juniors who take the exam, about 16,000, or approximately 1 percent, earn scores that qualify them as semifinalists. This group is narrowed down to 15,000 who become finalists. Of this group, about 7,500 are awarded scholarships of $2,500 a year which can be renewed each year in college.

Science Olympians Headed to State

Chardon’s middle and high school Science Olympiad teams finished up a grueling competition season by competing in the rigorous regional finals at Mentor High on Feb. 23. Both the B Division (Grades 6-9) and the C Division (Grades 9-12) qualified for the annual state competition. The B team took second place and the C team took fifth. The top six teams in each division qualified for state, which will be held in April at The Ohio State University.

Chardon’s Science Olympiad is a program of extra-curricular study designed to challenge and enrich our most scientifically motivated students. Although Science Olympiad is competitive, most events require teamwork, group planning and cooperation. The emphasis is on learning, participation, having fun and developing team spirit.

CHS Heart-2 Heart Dance

On Feb. 21, Rob Mizen’s AC4P leadership class from Chardon High School hosted its annual Heart-2-Heart Dance at Park Auditorium. The party was a late Valentine celebration for area senior citizens and a great way of connecting generations through dance. The DJs spinning ‘60s-‘80s oldies tunes was perfect for breaking the ice between the students and seniors and the dancing was non-stop, a true sign of a successful event.

Park second-graders were also on hand to share poems and serenade the seniors. A complimentary lunch was also served, courtesy of University Hospitals food service provider, Sodexo, Inc. Thanks to all who helped make the day such a success, including the Geauga County Department on Aging and UHHS Geauga Medical Center.
