Give The Gift Of Milkweed

In an effort to bolster the imperiled Monarch butterfly population, Geauga Park District is again propagating native milkweed, and is giving plants away for free on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Milkweed will be distributed at two different locations: stop by The West Woods Nature Center on May 12, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the Mother’s Day Milkweed Giveaway, or stop by Claridon Woodlands on June 16, from 9:30 a.m. and noon for the Father’s Day Milkweed Giveaway, to get a free milkweed plant and learn how, where and when to plant it on one’s property.

Pots, often holding multiple plants, will be limited to one per family on a first-come, first-served basis. Call Tami Gingrich at 440-279-0811 with questions.

Call For Artists: Nature Arts Festival

The park district welcomes exhibitors of nature-inspired artwork to apply for space in its 28th annual Nature Arts Festival on Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Big Creek Park in Chardon Township.

This event is co-marketed with the Chardon Square Arts Festival to attract maximum attendance to both events, with a free 5-minute Lolly the Trolley ride connecting them. Exhibitor information can be found on the park district website or at The West Woods Nature Center, open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Applicants must submit at least four images of their artwork for jurying, including one of their display. Spaces are available indoors and outdoors. Wildlife artwork will be given preference over artwork depicting domestic animals.
