The Geauga Dairymen 4-H Club met on May 5 at the Hastings Dairy Farm in Burton. President Garrett started the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge. Old business included a recap by members and parents of information they learned at the DairyPalooza held at the Canfield Fairgrounds on April 27.

Fundraiser chocolate bars and fruit snacks were distributed to each member; cost is $1 per bar or package. Advisor Emma announced the public speaking contest, which is open to all members, and reminded members about animal lease fees and rules for attendance at meetings.

In new business, members were asked to gather rope halters, brushes, fly spray and a good pair of boots so they would be ready for working with their animals this summer.

June is dairy awareness month and the club brainstormed ideas to celebrate and promote dairy such as having an ice cream party and filming a video with a theme of “a day in the life of a dairy cow” or “a day at the dairy farm.”

It was announced that Skillathon is July 20 and project books need to be complete for judging. Members need to try on old club sweatshirts and white show pants in preparation for the upcoming fair.

Courtney and Luke demonstrated how to properly dress a wound, Josh explained and gave facts on the solar system, Mark and Paul presented “what to do with all the poo,” ways to recycle and reuse cow manure and Garrett taught and demonstrated the process of choosing quality bull semen and the process of artificial insemination of a dairy cow. All members participated in tying fleece blankets for the dairy basket that will be auctioned off at the fair.

The next meeting is June 2 at 10 a.m. at the Hastings Dairy Farm. (Submitted by Paul, news reporter)
