Twenty-two kids and six adults attended the annual Geauga 4-H Advisory Field trip to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, the Wade Oval and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank on June 27. Michelle May and Lisa Briggs did a great job organizing the trip.

The tour included the Federal Reserve Law Enforcement Training Center with its indoor shooting range and mat room. The group explored the old vault, which had a 10-foot, 100-ton door that was 4 feet thick, yet opened with just two people. The impenetrable walls of the reserve are made out of rebar, ball bearings and concrete.

Club members enjoyed the movie on the meaning of money in the Stone Island Theater. The most popular game was “Planning Your Future” where participants hope to make enough money for a car or retirement goals. The kids also enjoyed printing million dollar bills with their own faces on them.

After lunch at the Wade Oval, members volunteered at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, the largest hunger relief organization in Northeast Ohio, serving Cuyahoga, Ashland, Geauga, Lake, Richland and Ashtabula counties where one in six people are food insecure. Granny’s Kids filled the monthly food boxes with 13 items for senior citizens and filled up almost 360 boxes in two hours.

A donation of only one dollar can provide meals for four hungry people in a community. Last year, 18,000 volunteers saved the food bank more than two million dollars in salaries. Consider volunteering or donating to the food bank and make a difference in the community. (Submitted by Lina Ferg, club reporter)
