Hello from Geauga County Amish Country

It was a beautiful day on July 4. It was a nice day for all the people going camping.

It was a beautiful day on July 4. It was a nice day for all the people going camping. Hopefully, it did not get rained out. Our family who did not have other plans got together at son Perry’s for a cookout.

Our sympathy goes to the family of Joe and Karen Miller in the death of their son Joshua, 12, when he and his dad were hit from behind on a tractor.

Also, our thoughts and prayers are with the Aaron and Rebecca Hershberger family since the accident of their son Caleb, 5, when he fell down the hay mow and suffered severe head injuries.

Wedding season has slowed down somewhat. Although I still have a few for July and more later on in the fall.

On July 8, I left for Mio, Mich., with daughter Sylvia and family. We planned to stop at daughter Betty and Melvin’s family. We then left for the Upper Peninsula and Mackinac Island on July 9, are coming back to Mio and returning home on July 13. I have a wedding invitation in Mio at nephew Lester and Linda Miller’s on July 18 of their daughter Maria. So, if some of the Miller relatives come for the wedding, I will stay and come back with them.

The farmers are finally able to make hay and plant the rest of their corn. Also, gardens are late this year, but the raised gardens are doing pretty well. Produce stands are selling produce. I had my first peaches, one of my favorite fruits. They make a wonderful smoothie.

It was another warm day on July 6. There was lots of hay down, which should make the farmers happy.

I made a run to Middlefield in the morning. I stopped at the bank and that was “loaded” and then I picked up a few groceries and my meat at Heritage Meats located across from MyoFit. If you haven’t stopped in there yet, you may want to check it out. Their meat is the best. Also, on Saturdays they serve pulled pork, chicken and grilled burgers made in front of the store. They are delicious.

From Out of the Past

Welshfield, Ohio: July 30, 1892

Farmers have commenced to make hay.

J.C. Schlabach has put a new wall under his house.

We had several heavy rain and thunder storms in this community. E.E. Miller’s house was struck by lightning on the 27th. A dog was in the house and was killed. The hired girl was in an upper room and received a slight shock, being unconscious for some time. There was very little damage to the building.

Burton, Ohio: July 15, 1892

Farmers are busy in the hay fields.

A heavy thunderstorm in the area. Three cows belonging to James Humiston were killed by lightning. Lee Osmond, age 14 years, son of T. Osmond, was out in the field cultivating corn when he and the horses were struck and killed.

Today (Friday) a heavy rain and hail storm passed through the community and many farmers were caught in the field.

So that was also a year of much spring rains. Stay cool and enjoy the summer.
