Hello from Geauga County Amish Country
November 14, 2019 by Sara Miller

It was foggy on Monday morning, Nov. 11, but it was not very cold.

It was foggy on Monday morning, Nov. 11, but it was not very cold. Our first snow has all gone, giving us a foretaste of what’s to come.

Our thoughts are with the family of Daniel and Barbara Byler. Daniel died of a heart attack the evening of Nov. 8, with his funeral being on Nov. 11. They have a family of three boys and four girls. Daniel has two sisters living in Richfield Springs, N.Y., and a sister living in Carrollton, Ohio.

The afternoon of Nov. 10, Dan and Sylvia and Timmy went to their son Danny Ray and Betty’s, so I went along and visited at son Mark’s. I picked a good time as their neighbors, Mel and Mary Ann Bricker, brought supper for Mark’s. They had barbecued ribs, stir fry, salad, rolls and dessert. It was yummy.

I’m watching my bluebirds at the feeder. There are five here. So, I’m guessing they are the young ones who hatched this summer. They love mealworms.

The annual Amish Craft Show on Nov. 8 and 9 was held at Buster Miller’s. They had a hundred tables or more with all kinds of different displays and a lot of local talent was shown. I even did some Christmas shopping.

On Nov. 12, sisters Edna, Fannie and Elmina, niece Ellen Hershberger, niece Barbara Yutzy and I visited cousin Sara and Lester Hostetler’s on state Route 534. Their daughter Kathryn recently died.

On Nov. 13, I planned to have a ladies day if plans held out. We only have a ladies day when school is in session and the ladies are not busy.

Emanual Hershberger had plans to come home from Burton Health Care once they have things ready at home for him. They needed to have a ramp built first. He had a very serious surgery several months ago. He and his wife Sara live in a trailer at their son Emanual and Martha’s. Mail and visitors would be welcome. Address is Emanual Hershberger, 16070 Newcomb Road, Middlefield, Ohio 44062.

After I finish here, I had better go and dig out the last flower bulbs as a winter storm is predicted. I only have one flowerbed to take care of. I only had flowerpots on the patio. It was a lot less work.

From Out of the Past: Nov. 8, 1899

As I was requested by many friends in Indiana who would like to hear from me, I will write a few lines for the Budget so they can all read it. (The Budget is an Amish paper written by Amish in all communities.)

They arrived in Geauga County from Indiana on October 22 and rented a house 2 miles south of Middlefield. I am now hauling logs to Middlefield for the picket factory. I like this country well and would like to see some of our friends come and see this beautiful country.

Two families moved here from Lawrence County since we did and several more from Holmes County are planning to move here in the spring.

David Coblentz was accidently shot last night while out coon hunting and was instantly killed.

Chuckles

The little girl came home from school one afternoon and said to her mother, “I wish you would let me take my bath in the morning before I go to school instead of at night before I go to bed.”

“What difference does it make?” her mother asked.

“Every day the teacher tells all to stand up who had a bath today. And I haven’t been able to stand up once since school started.”

The bride was a rather untidy housekeeper and knew it. At last one day she mustered the energy to give things a thorough cleaning. That evening her husband shouted from the hall in great dismay, “Honey, where’s the dust on this table. I had a phone number written in it.”

So much for cleaning the house!

Thoughts to Ponder

If you jump to conclusions, you may leap over the facts.

What you fall for is determined by what you stand for.

You all have a good week.
