Geauga Beef and Swine

The club’s 4-H meeting took place May 15 at 4 p.m. on Zoom. Minutes were read from its April meeting.

Members presented their reports to the club. Projects were about: nutrition and feeding, structural differences, responsibility, proper poultry nutrition and swine equipment needed for fair. The energy topic was about different forms of energy. The health and safety topic was about first aid.

Skillathon is still to be at the fairgrounds on July 18. Club members need to start working on buyers letters to sell their animals at fair.

In the meeting members learned about pig illness, beef feed and chicken/turkey parts.

The next meeting will be on June 14th at 4 p.m. on Zoom. (Submitted by Kaiden Wolcott)

Geauga Dairymen

The Geauga Dairymen 4-H Club held a virtual Zoom meeting at 11 a.m. April 25. The club was unable to meet in person due to Covid-19. Old business discussed was Dairy Palooza, the club’s 4-H fundraiser and quality assurance.
New business discussed included updates on Covid-19 and its impact on 4-H, project books, king and queen nominations and the 2019 Hoards Dairymen winners. The overall winners were Garrett with first place, Gabriella with second and Jack with third. They will each receive a bag to put 4-H supplies in.
Three members did demonstrations. Mark showed everyone how to make peanut butter squares, Paul went over how to use a compound bow and Jack talked about beef jerky and what it is and where in the cow it comes from.
Nancy did education and talked about the impact of Covid-19 on agriculture. A virtual scavenger hunt was organized by Jimmy for recreation.

The next meeting was scheduled for May 17 at 11 a.m.

Feathers and Fleece

On May 4, the 80 members of Feathers and Fleece 4-H Club participated in its first web-based monthly meeting over Zoom. Since the Ohio 4-H organization won’t let the club meet in person, it was the only way to catch up on club news and future events. It wasn’t the first Zoom meeting that many of club members were involved in, but it was the largest.

As in regular meetings, members said the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge together. Then was roll call, and there were lots of kids raising hands, getting unmuted to say “here” or just waving.

Members then heard about the budget and what they talked about last meeting.

After that, the club officers talked about new business. For example, “What is going to happen with quality assurance, where we learn about our animals?” or ”What is going to happen about the fair over Labor Day Weekend?” Hopefully, everyone finds the answers soon.

A lot of the club’s service projects have been delayed until the coronavirus is gone. Members like to get together and raise money for charity and show their rabbits at nursing homes. They are not able do these projects right now.

Members can still participate in making blankets for veterans, writing letters to active military and donating food for the pantries. They are getting started on turkey, duck and chicken projects. Some members have lambs, goats and pigs, too.

There are a lot of 4-H adventures to come this year, and I can’t wait to be able to return to normal meetings. (Submitted by Margo Brugger, news reporter)
