Hello from Geauga County, Amish Country,
It was a nice morning Tuesday, Sept. 8 after all the rain on Monday. My rain gauge showed almost 3 inches of rain. Some basements were flooded and ditches were overflowing.
Labor Day was not a very nice day to do anything outside. The campers had to scramble inside in the morning.
Our family got together in the evening on Labor Day at son Joe’s for Joe Saloma’s birthday. Later, it quit raining and we could sit around the fire pit. All too soon, those times will pass. The summer has gone by way too fast with lots of weddings and funerals. It was quite busy.
Our sympathy to the family of Mrs. Mahlon Sarah Byler, of Navoo Road, in the passing of their mother. She died Monday morning. Her funeral was on Wednesday afternoon due to a wedding on Sept. 10. She was 90 years old.
Our three-day vacation in Cook Forest was much enjoyed by five of us friends. It rained quite a bit on Friday, but cleared up enough that we were able to go up to the fire tower. It was an 80-foot climb and the view was breathtaking. We also went over the swinging bridge. Most exciting of all was we saw a bear. He came up right behind the cabin next to ours and was eating garbage from a garbage can he tipped over. We watched him for around 20 minutes, and then he slowly ambled into the woods. Cook Forest is located in Clarion, Pa. The cabins are quite rustic, but comfortable. Over 8,500 acres of forest with trails to walk, plus many other activities to do such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, picnicking, boating and more. There’s a 13-mile stretch of the Clarion River that flows through Cook Forest State Park and is popular for canoeing, tubing and kayaking. There is lots of fun for everyone.
Today, Sept. 10, I hope to attend the wedding at Clarence and Marie Kurtz of their daughter Rachel to Henry Jr., son of Henry and Rhoda Miller. Clarence has been taking treatments all summer for his cancer. We are glad he is feeling better.
Blackbirds are flocking and stopping in for a free meal before they head for wherever they go for the winter. I wouldn’t mind if they stayed there. My bluebirds are back after being gone somewhere for a month or so. So, the fights over who gets the mealworms first continue.

A husband went to buy a gift for his wife’s 40th birthday. At the store, he saw some cute little music boxes. One blue one was playing “Happy Birthday.” Thinking they were all the same, he bought one. Later at dinner with the friends he had invited over, he asked his wife to open her gift. When she lifted the lid, out came the tune, “The Old Gray Mare, She Ain’t What She Used to Be.” It was not a good sign.
