Granny’s Kids
Granny’s Kids 4-H Club meets Sunday evenings. The last meeting was April 11 outdoors at Mrs. Kitko’s in Chagrin Falls. Members are looking forward to receiving their project books and about half have already attended quality assurance training. There is one training session left, which will be held May 1 at the fairgrounds at 10 a.m. or members can pay $12 to do it online.
Market goats must be born by April 1. Breeding rabbits must be born by May 2. All fancy poultry must be hatched by May 31. This year, the club has new poultry and swine advisors to help the kids with their projects.
One member shared a poultry word search and the club voted to join the Geauga Hunger Task Force. Each meeting, members share reports, games or posters and the group has snacks at every meeting.
In April, members discussed nutrition. Smaller feed mills and specialty brand feeds were recommended, as sometimes well-known brands change ingredients and protein levels. Even a small change in salt levels can upset digestion in pigs, for example.
Four-H membership closed April 15, but interested new members can still visit to select a club for next year.
The next meeting will be held May 16 at a local park. Contact the Ohio Extension office for details. [Submitted by Buddy Ferg, news reporter]
Breeders and Feeders
The Breeders and Feeders 4-H Club met on March 14 at the Munson Town Hall. The main meeting started at 1:37 p.m. and was led by the club president, Rachel. Haylee volunteered to approve the meeting and Seth seconded the approval.
The club discussed that at the next meeting members will be collecting donations for the Humane Society and that in-person quality assurance will be held at the fairgrounds on May 1 at 10 a.m.
In December of 2020, the club collected donations, food and supplies for Geauga County senior citizens. A total of 150 filled bags were distributed in the community. (Submitted by Hannah Hutchinson, news reporter)
Geauga Beef and Swine
The Geauga Beef and Swine 4-H Club meeting was in person at the fairgrounds on April 18. There were 25 members present and six advisors. The club has 55 market projects going to fair this year, which include beef, swine, ducks, chickens and turkeys.
Members are starting to get their pig and turkey projects this month. Members presented their projects about poultry showmanship, bringing home baby turkeys and nutrients.
The safety topic was about carbon monoxide and the energy topic was on facts about propane. The club voted on sending a check to the Geauga Hunger Task Force for its community service.
Members are practicing for skillathon, learning breeds, diseases and parts of their project animals. Topics discussed were spring shedding for beef, and for pigs, members discussed pointers on working with hogs and how success starts at home.
The next meeting will be in May. (Submitted by Kaiden Wolcott, 11, news reporter)
