University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center was designated a high-performing hospital for maternity care for 2022-23 by U.S. News & World Report.

U.S. News evaluated 649 hospitals that provide labor and delivery services. Out of that total, UH-Geauga Medical Center was one of only 297 hospitals rated as high performing, which is the greatest award a hospital can earn in maternity care, according to a press release from the hospital.

“UH-Geauga’s high-performing designation in best maternity care is a true testament to the high-quality care our team brings to new parents and their babies each and every day,” said Dr. Natalina Andreani, division chief of obstetrics and gynecology and associate chief medical officer at UH-Geauga Medical Center. “I’m proud of our team for continuing to exceed national standards of care for our patients.”

The hospital said U.S. News methodology is based on objective measures of quality and looks at hospital data only for uncomplicated pregnancies — not high-risk pregnancies.

These evaluations assist expectant parents, in consultation with their doctors, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity care, the hospital said.

Hospitals were evaluated by eight key factors, including cesarean section delivery rates, early elective delivery rates, overall unexpected newborn complication rates and exclusive breast milk feeding rates. For the 2022-23 ratings, four new measures were factored into the score — routine vaginal birth after cesarean delivery rates, episiotomy rates, whether each hospital met new federal criteria for “birthing-friendly” practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities.
