EAA Chapter 5’s 2025 Summer Youth Aviation Camp was a soaring success, offering an exciting, hands-on introduction to aviation for students in grades 7 through 10. Held at Geauga County Airport in Hangar 3, the weeklong camp hosted 18 students from across Ohio—and even as far as Texas and Oregon.

From 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. each day, students rotated through six sessions, including ground school, building, learning modules, flight simulators, engines and activity periods. Campers learned about aerodynamics, aircraft components, aviation careers and flight operations. They built drones, practiced on simulators and participated in STEM-based experiments like balloon car races and a NASA Lunar Landing challenge.

Outdoor aviation demonstrations included RC aircraft, gliders, and a “touch-and-go” landing demo. Fun competitions like glider flying added to the experience. More than 30 volunteers—including four returning SYAC alumni—helped run the camp, with Camp Administrator Sherry Niederkorn coordinating the schedule.

Each day concluded with a guest career speaker from the aviation field. The week ended with a one-on-one Young Eagle Flight with a pilot in a real airplane, where campers could apply what they learned.

SYAC 2026 will be held July 6–10. Applications will be available in March at eaa5.org. Space is limited to 18 new students.
