Journaling The Great Outdoors

Writing, sketching and taking photographs can be relaxing, thought-provoking ways to reflect on the world around. Why not cast that reflection on the great outdoors and allow it to strengthen mindfulness and connection with nature?

The park district’s Nature Journaling series provides great inspiration to do just that. Participants will draw their inspiration from the different ways animals prepare for winter at The West Woods’ Affelder House on Nov. 2 from 1-3:30 p.m., and Nov. 3 from 9-11:30 a.m. Then participants will focus on winter tree ID at Big Creek Park’s Meyer Center on Dec. 7 from 1-3:30 p.m. and Dec. 8, from 9-11:30 a.m.

Registration is required by phone, for the purpose of identifying first-timers.

Beginners are always welcome. Call or email Naturalist Renell Roebuck ahead of time with questions at 440-226-2894 or rroebuck@geaugaparkdistrict.org.

Explore Welton’s Gorge

The park district invites visitors to experience the beauty of Welton’s Gorge in Burton Township through outdoor and virtual programs for all ages in November and December. All programs highlight the gorge’s deep rock ledges, cool streams and vibrant wildlife.

Join Chief Naturalist John for Welton’s Gorge Backcountry Exploration on Nov. 8, from 9-11:30 a.m., a strenuous off-trail hike through rugged terrain and streambeds. Enjoy a gentler Welton’s Gorge Fall Trail Hike with Naturalist Trevor on Nov. 22, from 9-10:30 a.m., featuring fall color and early signs of winter.

For an online option, join Naturalist Renell’s virtual Tour of Welton’s Gorge on Dec. 1, from 7-8 p.m. Active seniors can take part in a Geauga Walkers hike on Dec. 16, from 1-2:30 p.m.
