Spring at Observatory Park

Observatory Park in Montville Township is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. through Memorial Day, then 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. through Labor Day.

Outdoor movie nights return with “Finding Nemo” on June 13 and “Superman” on July 11. Pre-show activities begin at 6 p.m., with movies starting at 7 p.m. on a large LED screen. Bring a blanket, lawn chair and refreshments.

Those with a telescope who would like to learn more about using it may bring it to the park April 11 from 4-5 p.m. for a quick consultation with an experienced astronomer. Registration is not required.

Walk-up guided night sky viewing will be held from dark to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 10,11 and 24, May 8, 9 and 22, and June 12, 13 and 26. Members of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society will also host walk-up night sky viewing at Nassau Astronomical Station (accessed by a different entrance to the park) April 25, May 23 and June 27 from dark until 11 p.m. If cloudy, enjoy a planetarium show instead.

Walk-up Full Moon Hikes will be held April 1 (The Crow Moon) at 8 p.m.; May 1 (The Sandhill Crane Moon) at 8:30 p.m.; May 31 (a blue moon) at 9:30 p.m.; and June 29 (The Strawberry Moon) at 9 p.m.

astronomy programs will be focused on the topics of Black Holes on April 10 (or virtually April 24), Radio Astronomy on May 8 (or virtually May 22), and Make a Sundial on June 12 (or virtually June 26). Those interested in virtual versions of the programs must register to receive a link to join.

For children ages 3-5 and 6-11, volunteer naturalist Jann Glove and Commander Melvin will present various satellite-themed Astrotots and Astrotots XL on May 15 and 16. Registration is required.

“Astro-Nat” Chris presents his famous Sky Tonight Planetarium Shows inside the Robert McCullough Science Center Sundays, April 25, May 23 and June 27, all from 4-5 p.m. Register for a 45-minute time slot in advance.
