There were few empty seats at Chardon Schools Board of Education meeting Monday, a sure sign school is set to begin Aug. 26, the first day back for students.
The board voted on a series of housekeeping issues, heard no public participation and approved financial reports, personnel contracts and new board policies.
The meeting started with congrat-ulations to the 2013 Chardon High School Envirothon team, which finished 12th in the North American champion-ships in Montana, where 57 states and Canadian provinces competed.
Team members Kirsten Tysl, Erin Conway, Melanie Cohn, William Porter and Sebastian Diaz-Rodriguez qualified for the competition after Chardon High School won the state Envirothon for the eighth time in nine years.
With the guidance of advisor Marilyn Rohr, Chardon’s team has become known nationally for its excellence in the environmental science competition.
“I’d like to tell the community that these students are bright, articulate, fun-loving,” said board member Larry Reiter, who chaperoned the group. “They had exemplary behavior.”
During Superintendent Michael P. Hanlon’s report, the board approved the purchase of a new school bus from Myers Equipment Corp. of Canfield for $85,655.
Two older buses were also disposed of with trade-in values of $1,200 and $2,500.
Hanlon recommended 21 changes to board policies, mostly minutiae designed to put the board in compliance with state law, he said. Copies of the policy changes can be picked up at the board office, 428 North St., Chardon.
Other meeting happenings included:
The board approved 14 high-schoolers to participate in a leadership retreat at Virginia Tech’s Actively Caring 4 People program in October.
The maintenance department’s monitoring of Maple and Munson Elementary saved the district $10,084.
Al Herner, an English teacher, was approved as the high school’s newspaper advisor.
Andy Dubeansky and Mark Coso were approved to lead the high school’s soccer program.
