Seek Signs Of Spring

As winter’s grip weakens in the final weeks of winter, join senior naturalist Dan Best for two walkabouts to celebrate the promise of spring as heralded by sap rising in the maple trees, mammal activity and early bird migration.

Discovering Springs Early Expressions is March 2, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Orchard Hills Park, 11340 Caves Road in Chesterland, and from 3-4:30 p.m. at Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve, 11620 Ravenna Road in Munson Township

Registration is not required.

Sap’s-A-Risin’ Celebration

Bring the family and friends out to Geauga Park Districts Saps-A-Risin for a taste of how maple sugaring has evolved since the Native Americans, then a taste of the sticky stuff itself.

Sap’s-A-Risin’ takes place March 3, 10 and 17 from noon to 4 p.m. at Swine Creek Reservation, 16004 Hayes Road in Middlefield Township.

Guests are always excited for this free experience: to enjoy historical interactions with costumed interpreters, gather sap during a stroll through the sugarbush, see and learn how sap is boiled in the sugarhouses evaporator, enjoy a sample taste of syrup, and then warm up in the lodge with live music, woodcarving demonstrations, maple stirs and maple popcorn.

Each day the lodge also features wood carving demonstrations and sales with Jim Stadtlander and Diane Harto, maple treats and live music, including the New Deal String Band on March 3; Drake Hollow on March 10; and Dave and Barb Partington on March 17.

Registration is not required.

Landscaping, Outdoor Lighting Seminar March 4

The Joint Park and Recreation Committee (JPARC) is sponsoring a free do-it-yourself landscaping and outdoor lighting seminar to residents within the Chardon Local School District on March 4 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Chardon Middle School south entrance room 222.

Participants will learn how to highlight a home using plant materials and/or illumination as well as learn money saving tips of what, when and how to buy, plant and install. Ask questions and get answers from the experts.
