Groundhog Day Feb. 2

Let’s see if Phil the groundhog sees his shadow on Saturday at Gobbler’s Knob near Punxsutawney, Pa. Based on Phil’s reaction, will we have six more weeks of winter or is spring just around the corner? Time will tell.

St. Luke’s Community Dinner

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Wilson Mills Road will hold a community dinner Feb. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donations are accepted, but not necessary.

The monthly dinner is served as a way for the community to break bread together.

The community dinner at the Chardon Methodist Church is also terrific and is served on the fourth Sunday of each month from 12:15-1 p.m.

St. Mary’s Church on North Street also serves a community dinner on the last Thursday of the month.

Super Bowl XLVII

Coaches Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh, the famous brothers, will square off on Sunday afternoon as viewers watch with enthusiasm the commercials as much as they will watch the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens in New Orleans. Bring out the munchies and have a great time as the annual ritual returns for its 47th year.

Boy Scout Fundraiser Breakfast

Tom Benda invites individuals who wish to support Scouting in Geauga County to the annual fundraiser breakfast at St. Mary’s Banquet Room on North Street beginning at 7 a.m. on Feb. 7. Please contact him through St. Mary’s Church.

Sheriff Dan McClelland and Ed Babcock will present awards to outstanding contributors and a guest speaker will review the great accomplishments of Scouting and the benefits to all in the community. Last year, the Chardon breakfast raised $24,000 for Scouts and Scouting programs.

GOP Women’s Spaghetti Dinner

The Geauga County Republican Women’s Club is having its annual all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner on Feb. 8 at 12200 Auburn Road In Munson.

Donations are $12 per person. Youth 10 and under are free.

Call 440-729-7275 for reservations. Walk-ins are welcome.

Comment for the Day

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Stan Allenby. He attended the Chardon Kiwanis Christmas dinner with his son Jeff and he was in great spirits. That may be because his granddaughter Jill Allenby was part of the Chardon High School Free Harmony Christmas program. Everyone loved it.

May he rest in peace in the arms of our Lord and our condolences go out to his wonderful family.
