Moth Madness

June is the month for big silkworm moths, and now visitors can discover what species inhabit the area during unique late night and early morning viewing experiences at The West Woods Nature Center.

Mothing at The West Woods: Parts 1 & 2 takes place June 28 from 10:30 p.m. to midnight and June 29 from 5-6:30 a.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

Sightings of silkworm moths would be made all the more exciting by their size. Some are as large as the human hand.

Program is free; registration not required.

“Afripean” Beats

Take the violin’s European flavor and fuse it with African drums. That’s the hybrid “Afripean” sound that will fill Geauga Park District’s scenic outdoor amphitheater on June 29, from 7-8:30 p.m.

Who is Humble G? He’s a Cleveland area, mostly self-taught violinist with a distinct style. And he’s the frontman of Humble G & and Afripeans, the act on the schedule to perform among the trees that evening.

At its core, this unique band’s mission is to change the name of the game from hip-hop to hip-hope, its own personal brand of conscious, purposed rap, and to combine entertainment and “edutainment,” the concept of teaching and entertaining simultaneously.

Humble G & the Afripeans consist of three to four African drummers who accompany Humble G’s fab fiddle-playing. Shows consist of a mixture of original music and top 40 or oldies-but-goodies, all performed in the unique “Afripean” style, and sometimes playing “Afripean” over instrumental tracks of hit songs.

Despite the band’s interest in small group performances and music education, Humble G & the Afripeans have performed more than 500 times across the country and were among the featured entertainers for the Cleveland Rite Aid Marathon, which attracts more than 50,000 people, and the 2011 U.S. Tennis Open, with more than 720,000 in attendance.

Plan to enjoy refreshments, too, at this free show at Big Creek Park, 9160 Robinson Road, Chardon Township, which will move indoors in inclement weather.
