Campfire Food
Planning a camping trip and don’t know what to do about food? Learn the steps to take pre-trip and at home to plan delicious meals for camping expeditions.
Backwoods Dining will take place July 19 from 7-9 p.m. at Chickagami Park, 17858 Tavern Road in Parkman Township.
Included in this discussion will be fast and easy campsite preparation; how to protect food from camp raiders; and how to customize meals to ones needs and preferences.
Presenters Bruce and Sue Bennett of Claridon Township have been active in Geauga Park District as volunteers, Shutterbugs Camera Club members and leaders, presenters in the winter Armchair Adventures Travelogue Series and regular contributors to their own photo album on the Park District’s Facebook page. They also love being outdoors, having camped in Geauga County and built their own canoes to take to county waterways with their cameras.
Registration is required; event is limited to 20 adults. Demonstrations will be held on the mowed grass between the parking area and a campsite near Overlook Shelter.
Family Nature Day
Join other families to experience the Great Outdoors in a new way during Geauga Park District’s first-ever Family Nature Day being held July 20 from noon to 4 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.
Expect something for adults and children of all ages. Free outdoor activities will include pond scooping and a nature scavenger hunt, while free indoor activities will include pretzel stick fishing, nature crafts, a nature ID quiz and plant parts people eat every day.
The Northern Ohio Association of Herpetologists will also be on hand with an indoor show of live reptiles and amphibians. Registration is not required.
Dog Days Of Summer
Geauga Park District will hold its summertime Hound Hikes July 15, from 6:30-8 p.m. at The Rookery, 10110 Cedar Road in Munson Township; Aug. 24, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Swine Creek Reservation, 16004 Hayes Road in Middlefield/Parkman townships; and Sept. 16, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Beartown Lakes Reservation, 18870 Quinn Road in Auburn/Bainbridge townships.
Plenty of tails will be wagging as humans and their canine companions hike and pause to take in Geauga’s finest parks; pooches will also enjoy cooling their paws in the streams.
Registration is required. One non-aggressive dog is allowed per handler, who must be able to fully control the dog at all times on a leash no longer than eight feet. Participants must also bring their own dog towels, water bowls, poop scoops and bags for cleanup.
