Celebrate The Sun

The longest day of the year is something that should be celebrated. Solar Day/Summer Solstice Open House takes place June 21 from 3-9 p.m. at Observatory Park, 10610 Clay St. in Montville Township.

With the assistance of astronomy naturalists, also known as astro-nats, visitors can take this day to experiment with all kinds of solar-powered objects. Among them, try racing a solar car, cooking in a solar oven, washing ones hands with a solar shower and determining UV light with solar beads.

In addition, open house visitors will also be welcomed to view the sun safely through park district solar scopes – watchful for solar flares – and stick around to watch the sun set in the west.

Registration is not required for the free program.

Art Of The Stars

Get inspired by Observatory Park in a whole new way while creating a celestial-themed paper casting, suitable for framing and enjoying more in ones living or work space.

Celestial Paper Casting Art Workshop is June 19 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Observatory Park, 10610 Clay St. in Montville Township.

Registration is required for this experience to use handmade paper pulp with colorization, then finish with a 8-by-10-inch mat.

A half-hour planetarium demonstration will be offered afterward until 9 p.m., followed by night sky viewing, weather permitting.

A fee of $15 will cover materials and instruction.
