NDCL students give back and experience the importance of service on their summer vacation
While most students were starting their summer breaks at the pool or hanging out with friends, several NDCL students were on their way to help those who are less fortunate in the United States and beyond.
In early June, a group of NDCL students, faculty and alumni traveled to the Wayne County Work Camp in West Virginia. They joined students from schools across the United States.
“It was incredible how many people cared enough to donate their time, and came to help,” said NDCL junior Grey Wilson, of Russell Township.
The purpose of this trip was to help the people of Wayne County who needed home repairs and did not have the financial resources or health to take care of these themselves.
Honduras Service Project
While students were working in West Virginia, another group was on their way to Honduras. Rising seniors Jacqueline Vanek, Claire Spech and Mary D’Angelo and her parents, Nick and Colleen D’Angelo, embarked on the mission trip together.
“It was an incredible experience. On the trip we had many missions,” Vanek said, “some of which were building relationships with the people and also doing manual work. It amazes me that a child, whom I have never met or with whom I cannot communicate in words, can run up to me, hug me and bond with me in such a short time.”
On a typical day they completed at least four hours of manual work. They were helping to build a wall outside of the orphanage where they were residing. The work ranged from painting, making cement, digging holes and actually putting up the wall itself.
