The Berkshire High School chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 12 new students on Dec. 4. The student officers of the National Honor Society invited each new member to the stage to be recognized, receive their certificate and say the oath. The school is pleased to introduce its new NHS members: Zak Martinjako, Vince Noce, Josiah Sawyer, Barrett Jackson, Alyssa Maier, Jarett Smetana, Alex Sanda, Kieran Wichert, Alec Vizy, Maggie Topalian, Rachel Rich and Brad Lockhart.

The high school thanks Ms. Prots, the N.H.S. advisor, and the current National Honor Society members Alivia Alfredo, Megan Arnold, Alex Berman, Anna Carlson, David Chueng, Andrew Cook, Christin Dornback, Gwen Losasso, Carloyn Mayer, RJ Maxwell, Sarah McClellan, Grace Noce, Becca Porter and Emily Shantery for their work in planning the ceremony.

Youth Leadership is Thriving

Parents, teachers and administrators should be very proud of the 147 young leaders who came together in Geauga Youth Led Prevention’s third annual Youth Summit this fall. Each year, the young leaders take on the challenge of learning the real facts about marijuana in 2012, heroin in 2013 and risk factors that contribute to drug use and violence among their generation in 2014.

This year’s theme, “Be the Majority,” was led by college students, as well as several community members as motivational speakers. Members of student council, SADD, YLP, NHS and Interact clubs worked to transform the information from the day into an action plan for sharing what they learned with their home schools.

The summit was supported by a Lake-Geauga Youth Led Prevention grant from Ohio Mental Health and Addiction services, which includes support and funding for in-school leadership activities as well as scholarship awards.

Berkshire Junior-Senior High School’s leadership group was recognized as the first winner of the Be the Majority leadership award for the best plan to affect positive change in its district and share important information with peers.
