Science Olympians Advance

The NDCL Science Olympiad team made its presence known at the regional competition at Case Western Reserve University on Feb. 21. With 25 teams competing in 23 science-related events, NDCL is one of seven teams to advance to the state tournament at Ohio State University in April. It is no small feat, as the northeast Ohio region is one of the toughest in the state and includes the winner of many national championships – Solon High School.

Contributing to the day’s success were first place winners, seniors Ben Wozniak and Amanda O’Reilly in “Write it, Do it.” The event required one participant (O’Reilly) to view a model and then compose written directions for its construction within 25 minutes. The second participant (Wozniak) then had to build a duplicate model in 20 minutes using his teammate’s instructions.

“The event requires teamwork, skill and attention to detail,” O’Reilly says. “It was a lot of fun!”

Although the duo has been on the Science Olympiad team since freshman year, this is the first year they participated in this event.

Team moderator Pauline Cheeseman is particularly proud of the team. “As head coach this year my focus was to build team spirit. I wanted the students to realize that their performance in their assigned event, good or bad, affected the whole team. This team spirit was evident at Case and I believe this helped us qualify for states.”

Other team contributions include: Mission Possible – Angelo Capite and Nathan Lewandowski, sixth place; Geologic Mapping – Michael Plent and Justin Schlereth, seventh place; Chem Lab – Ben Wozniak and Collin O’Neill, ninth place; Protein Modeling – Collin O’Neill and Nora Nelson, ninth place; and Technical Problem Solving – Collin O’Neill and Angelo Capite, ninth place.

NDCL wishes the Science Lions the best of luck at states on April 11.
