WG Bands Perform At CSU

On Feb. 26, Dr. Birch Browning and the Cleveland State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble invited the West Geauga High School bands to perform at their first concert of spring 2015. The West Geauga symphonic and concert bands performed under the direction of Mr. Jason Branch and Mrs. Teresa Cosenza followed by a performance by the CSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Birch Browning in the Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University.

It was a great honor to be invited to perform. Both of the West Geauga High School bands and CSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble had outstanding performances.

WG Choir Rates Excellent

On March 6, the West Geauga High School combined choir earned a II “Excellent” rating at the OMEA District VII Large Group Event. It marks the first time in eight years that a mixed group comprised of both men and women from WGHS has appeared at an OMEA Large Group Event.

The ensemble was made up of all of the students registered for either treble choir, men’s chorus or chorale in grades 9-12. The group was not auditioned and no choral students were excluded, regardless of experience or ability. Almost half of the students have been in choir for less than one year and less than one quarter of them have been in choir for more than two years. The students only had three rehearsals as a combined group, done after school the week leading up to the event.

In order to participate in OMEA Large Group Events, a choir must select three pieces to prepare and perform for a panel of three judges. The WGHS combined choir sang “Ave Maria,” “Set Me As A Seal” and “Bonse Aba.” One of these pieces must be chosen from a required music list published by OMEA. Both “Set Me As A Seal” and “Bonse Aba” were on the list. In addition, the choirs must then sight-read a piece of music they have never seen for a fourth judge.

The combined ratings from the four judges result in a final rating. The possible ratings are V – poor, IV – fair, III – good, II – excellent and I – superior. The WGHS Combined Choir received a “II” from each of the four judges.

This rating comes less than two months after success earlier this year for WGHS choir students at OMEA Solo and Ensemble event on Jan. 24. Several choral soloists received I’s and II’s and Class Act received a “superior” rating for the fourth year in a row in the chamber ensemble category. WGHS choral students also performed with the Chagrin Valley Conference Honors Choir on Nov. 24.
