NDES Celebrates Moms

Students kicked off a special tribute to their moms with Morning with Mom on March 13, and the celebration continued with Mother Son Bowling on March 15. At Morning with Mom, students enjoyed refreshments and spending time with their moms while on Sunday, moms spent the day with their sons bowling at Freeway Lanes in Mentor.

A special thank you goes to the ND Parent Association for all the planning that occurred to make these events so wonderful.

Roles of Children During the Holocaust

Imagine you are an 11-year-old child and responsible for finding food to keep your family alive. On March 16, Sol Factor, a professor of Jewish studies at Kent State University, presented information about the Holocaust to the sixth-grade students at Notre Dame Elementary School.

Factor discussed the roles and challenges children faced during the Holocaust. Factor is a child of a Holocaust survivor and shared his personal story.

As part of the English curriculum, students have been studying the Holocaust through different pieces of literature such as “Number of the Stars” and “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.”

Cursed By Math

Almost everything in life can be considered a math problem. Inspired by “Math Curse,” a book about a student who is cursed by seeing math everywhere, fifth-grade students were challenged to find math problems in their everyday lives. As a collaborative and cross-curricular project with math and English, they worked in small groups and created a page that visualizes everyday math problems. All pages were then compiled in a book and will be on display at the NDES Learning Fair to be held April 22 from 6-8 p.m.
