Brr … it is cold again, but with the sunshine, it appears to be warmer.

The maple sugar guys have finally been able to start to sugar. Daughter Sylvia and family were out to see Ray Gingerich’s operation one evening last week. They had made over 100 gallons already.

Coming down from Jasper, N.Y., the morning of March 21 were brother Melvin and Mattie, their son Wallace and wife Laura Hershberger and sister Emma Weaver, picking up sister Edna Byler and myself to visit our sister Fannie and Melvin Yoder. Fannie had another five day hospital stay, being intensive care having pneumonia. She is feeling somewhat better. Their son Owen and Ella were there from Troutville, Pa., several days this past week.

Born to Joe and Sara E. Bricker, a son named Jason on March 22. He has two little sisters waiting to love and hold him. Grandparents are Roman and Ada Schlabach, of Shedd Road, and Ervin and Gertie Bricker, of Clymer, N.Y.

Our Sunday evening visitors on March 22 were son Perry, Katie Ann and two sons, daughter Sylvia, Dan and children and neighbor Marty, Susan and children. It was a very enjoyable evening.

Having brunch at Dan and Sylvia Miller’s on March 22 were their daughter Rosanna, Aden and two children and son Danny Ray and wife Betty.

Wedding bells are ringing for Clara, daughter of Marvin and Susan Miller, and Eli Ray Jr., son of Eli and Rosanna Kurtz. The wedding is on April 9.

Nathan M. Miller, of Shedd Road, is sporting a cast on his leg after an accident with a pony. He is 8 years old.

We are getting ready for a benefit pancake breakfast at Joe’s Window Shop the morning of March 27 for Daniel A. Burkholder. He fell at work and is paralyzed. They need to make their home handicapped accessible. Everyone is welcome to come. We will have all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, homemade donuts, orange juice and coffee. There will be donuts to go and also carryout. For carryout, call ahead if possible to 440-824-0326. The shop is located on the corner of Shedd Road and Route 168.

Bits and Pieces

March 5, 1899

Wet weather and the roads are simply awful.

Sugaring is in full blast. Albert M. Miller, of Arthur, Ill., was hired to help gather the sweets of 2,300 trees.

There are still some sick people here; among them is Levi, youngest son of John D. Miller, with pneumonia. There are also still some measles scattered around.

Lots of moving going on this spring. J.N. Byler bought the house and lot of T.A. Scott. Among those moving here from a distance are Peter Barkman, Phineas Yoder, J.J., M.J. and Samuel Miller, all of Holmes County, and A.J. Stutzman and Jerry Mast, both of Arthur, Ill., and John Hershberger of Indiana. M.J. Miller and John Hershberger bought farms, but all the rest have rented.

A Brooklyn public school teacher says that she once required a pupil to compose a sentence with the word dogma as the subject. The pupil, a lad of 10, submitted his effort, which read as follows: “The dogma has five puppies.”

The governor was puzzled.

“Look here,” he said turning to his private secretary. “Can you tell me whether this note comes from my tailor or my legal advisor? They’re both named Brown.”

The note read as follows: “I have begun your suit. Ready to be tried on Thursday. Come in. Signed, Brown.”

You all have a good day.
