Kick-It For Cancer

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin students partnered with the students from Notre Dame Elementary School to raise nearly $9,000 in the annual Kick-it for Pediatric Cancer event held on May 5. Led by NDCL’s Christian Leadership seniors Monica Friedl, Cindy Carballada, Lexie DeSico and Lilija Meadows, the “Sinko de Cancer” event was held at NDCL’s McGarry Gym.

The two schools, comprised of 1,250 students, are attached in a special way to this event because a second-grader at NDES died of cancer in 2011 and a NDCL senior, who battled cancer since eighth grade, beat the disease two years ago.

“We play for Sam and Dom,” shares Cindy Carballada.

“This is the third annual Kick-it in which we raise awareness and money for children’s cancer research by playing and leading kickball with children from NDES,” explains Monica Freidl.

Kick-it was founded in 2009 by a 10-year-old cancer patient from Ohio with a dream to cure cancer by playing his favorite game kickball. Since then, Kick-it has become a national organization, raising over $2 million for children’s cancer research.

The young men and women of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin are involved in an array of social justice and service activities. In most cases, they reach out to affect change or provide comfort a hands-on approach. The Kick-it for Cancer event is different because the student organizers ask for the support of others to help them reach their goal. Through this effort, they are learning to educate the community about the importance of their cause.
