Rise in Enrollment
The 2015-16 school year is seeing a rise in enrollment of students whose families are new residents of the West Geauga Local School District. According to district Registrar Diane Martin, the number of new students registered in August currently stands at 45, with more still arriving. By comparison, 27 new students registered in August 2014.
Martin said, “I was surprised to see so many new students registered into our district. It’s obvious to me that families want to establish some roots here at West G.”
Martin notes that many of the parents registering new students commented that they consider the West Geauga community to be a positive environment in which to raise their children and to provide them with a quality education.
Dr. Rich Markwardt, West Geauga superintendent of schools, notes that the influx of new students is “good news for the district,” which, like many others, has experienced downward enrollment figures in recent years as the general population ages.
Although the unexpected influx of students in the last few weeks has resulted in some slightly elevated class sizes in certain grades, Markwardt notes, “I’m glad that young parents view our community so favorably. We will do our best to live up to their expectations of our schools.”
Ribbon Cutting of Curtis Gate
A beautiful visitors gate was officially opened at the start of the West Geauga Chardon football game on Aug. 28. The new gate was made possible thanks to a generous donation by the Curtis family of Newbury, whose children attend West Geauga schools. The Curtis Gate anchors the north end of the field.
The West G Turf committee has been working closely with the district to improve the athletic facilities. It’s efforts have been greatly appreciated through-out this whole process.
It was an exciting energy-filled night on Aug. 28. The weather could not have been better. Well over 2,000 fans attended the game.
New Website Launched
The West Geauga School District’s new website has been up and running since late June. The new site will help the district increase communication with parents and the community in a timely manner.
The software was created by eSchoolView and will save the district over $1,000 per year.
The project began in February to find software that would be user friendly and easier to navigate.
“We needed a more updated look and functionality,” said Sean Whelan, director of technology. “The new site will enable us to host our own video content, increase our photo galleries and capability to include online forms, weekly updates and a full mobile site as well. This will be a great information source as to what is going on in our district and community.”
The district’s mobile app will be refreshed in September to match the new website.
