Hole-in-One for Learning

Westwood Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Dan Reich had an idea to help increase his students’ knowledge and application of geometry in an imaginative way. He applied and received a $1,500 grant from WEDGE to design and build the Westwood GeomeTEE Miniature Golf Course.

Over the last year, students applied their geometry skills to the design of golf holes. Students put forth many ideas. The Westwood teachers selected three designs and Deluxe Landscaping built them last summer.

“The students really got into the assign-ment. The potential real world outcome of their work, coupled with the opportunity to be creative and have fun, generated some impressive results,” said Reich.

To extend the potential of this initiative, two members of the West Geauga boys golf team, Michael Carovac and Zack Kirchner, along with their coach Jay Kletecka, came to Westwood to give putting lessons to the fifth graders.

Reich hopes that “teaching the students how to use the course as both mathematicians and athletes will allow the course to continue to grow and thrive as a versatile learning tool.”

WG DCC Meets

The West Geauga District Com-munications Committee (DCC) held its first meeting. After some brief introductions, Superintendent Richard Markwardt led the discussion about some of the district initiatives and student achievement.

The committee consists of West Geauga administration staff, a high school counselor, a WG student and members of the West Geauga community. The committee meets once a month in the middle school.
