Hello from Geauga County, Amish Country,
Walking in a winter wonderland. We got winter, much to the children’s delight. The birds are flocking to the feeders, so I need to refill.
Supper guests at daughter Sylvia and Dan’s the evening of Nov. 22 were Aden and Rosanna Troyer and children, Danny Ray and Betty Miller, and Joe and I. We were treated to a delicious turkey dinner.
The craft show here in our shop on Nov. 14 was well attended. There were about 40 different craft people. There was a steady flow all forenoon and up to early afternoon.
We hosted a dinner for the AFS exchange students and their host parents on Nov. 21. We had 107 people. We were presented a miniature flag from each country represented. The students were from Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Spain, Greece, Egypt, Kenya, Italy, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, China, Thailand and Japan. Neighbor Lester Schlabaugh gave the students buggy rides before we served dinner. It was quite exciting for them.
Our thoughts go to the family of Allen J. Miller, of Shedd Road, who fell around 20 feet while climbing up his tree stand, breaking most of his ribs plus other injuries. He is in a hospital in Akron. I have not heard anything for several days on how he is doing.
Ervin Miller Jr., of Burton-Windsor Road, is in rehab at Briar Hill following a hospital stay after having viral meningitis.
On Nov. 29, Joe and I were invited to son Richard’s for a delicious brunch. In the evening, Richard’s family was at recently married daughter Edna Mae and Wayne Hostetler’s. They are living at his grandparents’ house until they find another place to live.
Our family has plans to get together at daughter Sylvia and Dan’s on Thanksgiving Day. Then, on Nov. 28, we plan to cut up and wrap our pig meat. There will be 15 pigs total for some of the children and grandchildren. This is a day the “little people” look forward to and the day when I’m thankful when it’s over, although it is fun to all work together as a family. My father butchered many a pig, taking the meat to sell in Warren and he also had his regular customers. Back then, not everything had to be inspected and I never heard of anyone dying from the meat.
From Out of the Past
Ashtabula County, Ohio: Dec. 10, 1899
As we have moved to a new country, I thought I would write a few lines for the Budget to pass away the time.
We live 18 miles northeast of Middlefield in Trumbull County. The Byler boys have taken a job cutting, skidding, sawing and loading one million feet of lumber. A.J. Byler and the writer have the job of cutting at 75 cents per thousand. A.J. Farmwalt and R.J. Detweiler do the skidding.
This is very nice country, land sells for $5 to $25 per acre. There is a 50 acre tract near here for $350. All ready for the plow.
We were out hunting one day last week and in three hours we caught 9 rabbits.

Chuckles: The Blonds
New Windows: Last year, I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive double pane energy efficient kind. But, this week, I got a call from the contractor complaining that his work was complete a year ago and I had yet to pay for them. Boy, oh boy, did we go around. Just because I’m blond doesn’t mean I’m stupid. So, I proceeded to tell him just what his fast-talking sales guy had told me… that in one year, the windows would pay for themselves. There was silence on the other end of the line, so I just hung up. He hasn’t called back. Guess he was too embarrassed.
