WG Military Alumni Wanted
West Geauga High School is looking for alumni who served in the military.
The high school unveiled the first printing of the military poster on Nov. 2 in honor of Veterans Day. The poster is on display in the high school lobby and available for viewing. It is also available to view online on the district website, www.westg.org, in the archived news.
There are several alumni who did not make it in time for the first printing. The school is going to reprint the poster and would like to include anyone who may have missed the first one.
To be included, call Kim Rataiczak, 440-729-5930 or email kim.rataiczak@westg.org.
Rockin’ the Schools
The Rock the Schools program looks at some of the great stories of rock ‘n’ roll and examines how lyrics are really poems set to music and can establish a setting, introduce characters and develop a plot. Through exciting recorded performances by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees like Aretha Franklin, the Beatles and Chuck Berry, students learned how a narrative can be developed. They acted out an undersea adventure on a “Yellow Submarine” all while learning to summarize and retell the stories told through the universal language of music.
Veterans Day Visitor
The third-grade students in Miss Mehra’s class at Westwood Elementary School received a special visitor on Veterans Day. Former Army Capt. Leo Jansen came to visit and share his experiences.
After enlisting in the Army, Jansen spent some time at Fort Campbell, as well as other army bases around the country. When it came time to deploy, his orders were to Kandahar, Afghanistan, and Bagram, Afghanistan.
“One of the most important parts of Capt. Jansen’s presentation was how he compared the values that the Army has and Westwood’s,” according to Miss Mehra.
He explained to the students how responsibility and respect are part of the core values of the Army and at school.
Following the presentation, the students had many questions about the Army and Captain Jansen’s service.
“Our students enjoyed the enriching and engaging presentation and were sad to see Capt. Jansen leave,” said Miss Mehra.
