Handbell and Recorder Concert
NDES families enjoyed a handbell and recorder concert directed by Sr. Mary Donnalee Resar, SND on Jan. 20. Handbells for fourth and fifth-graders and recorders for third-graders are extracurricular programs available at NDES that provide children a foundation in music, while giving them an opportunity to play a musical instrument with a group.
Hands-On Day with Clay
Eighth-grade students spend a day with clay at some time during the year as part of the visual arts program at NDES. Each eighth-grade class takes a turn spending a day in the art room building a three dimensional piece of art of their design. Armed with their design, students mold slabs of clay into a pot, platter or bowl. Each clay piece is then fired and glazed.
Children of the Holocaust
Thousands of Jewish children survived the Holocaust as hidden children through the courageous efforts of many people during World War II. On Jan. 22, Mr. Roman Frayman shared his experience as a child during the Holocaust to the sixth-grade students at Notre Dame Elementary School. He shared his story of survival and his escape and life as a hidden child until the liberation eventually reunited him with his parents.
As a part of the English language arts curriculum, students have been studying the Holocaust through different pieces of literature such as the “Number the Stars” and “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.”
