BOE Members Recognized
The Ohio School Boards Association celebrates School Board Recognition Month in January to bring awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our society and for their commitment to providing quality public education.
West Geauga Local Schools is joining with other districts throughout the state to recognize the important contributions school board members make to their communities.
West Geauga residents have entrusted the West Geauga Board of Education to facilitate the development of each student in order that he or she may reach academic and ethical excellence. The public has also charged the board to apply fiscal prudence in the district’s quest to attain increasing excellence in the educational process. The West Geauga Board of Education is dedicated to this responsibility.
The board consists of five members each elected for staggered four-year terms by registered voters living in the district. Members are responsible for establishing the policies that the superintendent and the administrative staff follow through with and evaluating the educational program and determining whether worthwhile objectives are accomplished. The board also makes the final decisions on how the revenue of the West Geauga Local Schools is spent and when the district needs to go to the voters for additional tax dollars through levies and/or bond issues.
The current members of the West Geauga Board of Education are: Dan Thoreson, president; Thomas Phelps, vice president; and members Tom Allen, Ben Kotowski and Kathy Leavenworth. The five-member board elects a new president and vice president every January.
Dr. Rich Markwardt, West Geauga Superintendent of Schools, notes, “Few people recognize the time and energy that our board members expend on behalf of our community and its students. Ours is a bright board with broad experience and a deep pool of talent.”
