Spelling Bee Winners

St. Helen School held its annual spelling bee competition with more than 35 students participating in grades 48. Eighth-grader Garrett Sah was the winner for the second year in a row, with fifth-grader Joslyn Borah as the runner-up. Garrett will compete against Notre Dame School on Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. at St. Helen School.

Food Drive

St. Helen’s eighth-grade boys basketball team organized a food collection to replenish the cupboards of the Geauga County Hunger Task Force. Team members asked their classmates, teachers and parishioners to donate non-perishable items to their cause. After two weeks of accepting donations, the boys collected 1,437 food items for a total of 1,764 pounds of food to help feed the hungry of Geauga County.

Number The Stars

Sol Factor, a professor at Kent State University, was recently a guest speaker for the students of St. Helen School. Sol Factor is considered a first generation child survivor of the Holocaust. He was born in a displaced person camp at the end of World War II near Munich, Germany. While in camp, Mr. Factor and his mother were separated. He was later adopted by American parents and grew up in Boston.

Factor, an active member of the Maltz Heritage Museum and the Jewish community in Beachwood, has been on a 17-year search for his birth mother, who was discovered to be living in It’srael. Factor spoke to students who had recently read the novel “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry and have been discussing the heroes who either saved lives during the war or helped post war.

Factor’s story was fascinating and engaging. The students were able to learn much from this witness to history.
