Cursive Writing at NDES

Has cursive handwriting lost the upper “hand”? In many schools across the country cursive handwriting is no longer taught. The arrival of new technology is causing a big debate amongst educational leaders rethinking the importance of cursive writing.

However, NDES believes that cursive writing is a multi-sensory experience that supports cognitive function and development. In an era where educational paradigms are being turned upside down and new tools of learning are being introduced, NDES still maintains a balance between traditional and progressive learning methods.

Art of Public Speaking

Seventh- and eighth-grade students perfect the art of speaking through informative speeches.

As a part of the English language arts curriculum at NDES, seventh-grade students researched a famous person and presented the speech from the viewpoint of the famous person. Not only were the costumes authentic, but the seventh-graders also provided a wealth of information on their selected person.

Also, eighth-grade students prepared informative speeches on a specific topic. They researched the topic, prepared a speech outline and presented the speech to their peers using several different types of technology, such as short videos, voiceovers or PowerPoint presentations.

Communication is an everyday activity. Whether students are speaking to a group or one person, they can apply the same set of communication skills. NDES reinforces those communication skills with many speaking opportunities, allowing each student to become effective communicators.
