NEO Science and Engineering Fair
Congratulations to the following St. Helen students in making this year’s science fair an outstanding success at the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State University. Alex Mulacek received first place in Earth/space science; Dane Berschig received second place in physics; Maria Przybyla received second place in chemistry; Andrew Watts received second place in medicine/health; and Gregory Wenner received second place in physics. Anna Brent, Chris Carter and Madelyn Fisher received an honorable mention.
During the four day event, approximately 600 students from over 80 schools in the area set up their science fair displays, discussed their projects with more than 260 judges, scientists and engineers from the local area and competed for more than $20,000 in prizes.
Chris Carter and Alex Mulacek received the 2016 Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) Award. Alex Mulacek also received special awards from the Cleveland Regional Council of Science Teachers and from Cleveland State University’s Department of Biological, Geological & Environmental Sciences. Seventh-grader Gregory Wenner received an iPad and special award from Rambus, Inc. for his science fair project.
Muscular Dystrophy Association
Mrs. Chiacchiari’s sixth-grade class at St. Helen School raised $700 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Students sold shamrocks for a chance to win a St. Patrick’s basket valued at $150. Zachary Bores was this year’s winner.
This is the seventh year St. Helen School held this fundraiser. The current sixth-grade class has spearheaded the event every year. The class started it when they were kindergartners. With their help, St. Helen School has raised more than $6,300 for the MDA Summer Camp program.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
It was a beautiful cold and windy, yet, sometimes sunny day on March 17 in the heart of Cleveland. St. Helen Unicycle Team looked their best and won first place in Novelty Units at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
For those who missed their performance at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, they will be performing at the 87th Geauga County Maple Festival in Chardon on April 23 and 24.
