Students Unplugged
This past week found students in the fourth-grade music class at St. Helen School with a challenge placed upon them by their music instructor, Mrs. Wenner. They were learning about music in the Southwest and how people lived over 150 years ago with no electricity.
A question was posed upon them, “What do you do on your free time?” When all the answers came back with a mixture of iPad, iPod, iPhone, Wii, Xbox and computer, Mrs. Wenner then challenged the children to go one week without any electronic devices. The moans and groans were loud and endless. Then a week later, three of the challengers did go one week without. They then explained how much fun they had replacing that free time with other interests.
Congratulations go to the three challengers who succeeded: Tuscani Orris, Brycen Perez and Olivea Lucarelli.
Peter Pan
St. Helen student in grades five through eight will be performing “Peter Pan” on May 13 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the St. Helen School gymnasium. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Hale Farm
Third- and fourth-grade students spent the day at Hale Farm discovering how families lived, played and worked in the Western Reserve during the 1800s. Students learned about entrepreneurships and how settlers sustained social and financial impact through a hand crafted way of life. Live demonstrations of candle making, blacksmithing, pottery, glassblowing, spinning and weaving were favorites among the children.
