The Munson Township Bicentennial Celebration kicks off at 9:30 a.m. July 16, concentrating on the historical Fowler’s Mill area (at Mayfield and Fowler’s Mill Road) and exploring several historic businesses and sites, including the Fowler’s Milling Company, which was established in 1835; Voss home, built in 1841 with its beautiful recreated 1800s heirloom vegetable and flower garden; and Fowler’s Mill Christian Church, established in 1842.
According to the bicentennial program, from noon to 3 p.m., artifacts and pictures will be on display in the Munson Town Hall adjacent to the Munson Fire Department on Auburn Road.
A writers’ contest gave the public the opportunity to contribute their own stories to the celebration, said Bushman. The contest had four different age categories ranging from 10 years old to adult, asking participants to write about topics such as what it would have been like to live in Munson Township in the past, what the township might be like in the future and a testimony of growing up in Munson and what it meant to them.
Writing contest winners and raffle winners will be announced after the 3 p.m. parade, which will begin with the 1965 Pumper Fire Truck that is currently being restored, and the newly purchased Bucket Fire Truck, which will be on display.
Around noon, old fashioned games, food, pony rides and “rocket rides” from the former Euclid Beach Park will be on hand and homemade ice cream, kettle corn, raffle tickets and commemorative bicentennial T-shirts will be available for purchase.
Munson Township Trustees said they would like to thank publicly Alvord’s Yard & Garden Equipment, Aqua Doc Lake and Pond Management, and Payne & Payne Builders, Inc., for their donation of $500 each to make a $1,500 cash prize to the lucky winner of the raffle.
Proceeds of the raffle sale will go to the Munson Township Scholarship Fund. Tickets can be purchased at the town hall prior or during the bicentennial celebration, for $10 each or three for $25. There will also be a silent auction and a Chinese Auction the day of the bicentennial.
Handicap parking will only be available at the town hall, with shuttle service from Alpine Valley Ski Resort to the Munson Township events.
Walkers are also encouraged to explore the Interurban Train route as well.
