Hello from Geauga County, Amish Country.
It’s Monday morning, and it looks like it’s going to be a nice day. I guess we are having rain now to make up for what we didn’t get in June and July.
After being gone on a trip out west for 16 days, I will try and get a letter off to the Maple Leaf once again.
The afternoon of July 31, son Ray, Judy and daughter Maria, Ellen Hershberger, Joe and I went to Mio, Mich., to daughter Betty and family, where we spent visiting until Aug. 2. The morning of Aug. 2, Joe and I along with daughter Betty, Melvin and three children went to Flint, Mich., to board the train. We traveled to Chicago and then changed trains, which took us to Melba, Mont., where a shuttle took us to friends Daniel and Lavina Byler. We spent the night there and then also visited cousin John and Kathryn Miller in St. Ignatius, and then on to Gold Creek, Mont., where we spent two days visiting nephews, David Yoders and Peter Millers. From there we got on the train and went to Seattle, Wash. We spent two days there and then went to San Francisco. We went through Muir Woods, where we saw the gigantic redwoods. We crossed the Golden State Bridge and wet our feet in the Pacific Ocean. The last two days we were in Glenwood Springs, Colo. It is a beautiful place with a lot less people, noise, and no street people begging for handouts. We enjoyed it all, but home looked pretty good.
The wedding of Ruthie Yoder and Cristy Weaver was Aug. 18 at the bride’s home on Mumford Road, and Aug. 23 was the wedding at neighbor Marty Miller’s of their daughter Carol and Lester Byler. On Aug. 25 we are also invited to the wedding of Martha, daughter of Willy and E.J. Detweiler, and Enos, son of David and Sarah Barkman.
Marty Miller, whose sister got married Aug. 23, broke his leg above the ankle while sliding into base playing ball. He may not walk on his leg for six weeks or more. I am sure they missed his help getting ready for the wedding.
Women are busy canning tomatoes, beets and sweet corn. Gardens are producing well, even after having been dry for so long.
Dave and Cora Kurtz and I am not sure who else went to visit their daughter Christina and family in Mumfordville, Ky., this past weekend. He was expected to return home on Aug. 22.
Our visitors the evening of Aug. 21 were sons Marks, Perrys and Richards to hear about our trip out west. I wish they could all see the west someday. Son Richards did take a trip out there quite a few years ago.
With all our rains, we are cutting grass again, twice a week. Everything looks so nice and green again. When we left on our trip, the lawns were turning brown.
Our sympathy goes out to the family of Crist D. Byler, who died suddenly from a heart attack.

You all enjoy the rest of the summer. Soon schools will start and then it seems as if summer is almost over.
