Holiday Meal Volunteers Needed

Each year, the Geauga County Department on Aging offers a Thanksgiving meal and a friendly visitor to seniors in the community who are home and alone for the holiday. Meals may be picked up at the Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive in Chardon from 10:45-11:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24.

All volunteers must register by Nov. 17. To volunteer, contact Kristen Bibby, volunteer coordinator for GDA, at 440-279-2138.

Veterans Memorial Park Dedication

Nov. 11, 10:45 a.m.

Newbury Township will host its Veterans Memorial Park dedication at the park located at the intersection of Route 87 and Auburn Road. Special guests include members of Newbury American Legion Post 662 and the Newbury High School marching band. Speaker is Supreme Court Justice William O’Neill, retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army.

Housing Coalition Chili Cookoff

Nov. 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The Geauga County Housing Coalition is holding its fourth annual fundraiser at Metzenbaum Center, 8200 Cedar Road in Chester Township. A portion of the proceeds will be used for homeless and at-risk veterans in Geauga County.

Numerous Geauga County agencies will have their special chili recipes for attendees to taste and judge.

Tickets are $10, which includes appetizers, chili tasting, corn bread and homemade desserts.

PTO Craft & Vendor Boutique

Nov. 11, 6-9 p.m.

Munson Elementary School PTO Craft and Vendor Boutique will be held at Munson Township Hall, 12210 Auburn Road. Enjoy an evening of shopping at a variety of craft and vendor booths. Prize raffle and refreshments will be available. Admission is $3 for adults.

Gift Of Magi Boutique

Nov. 11-12

The annual Gift of Magi holiday boutique is Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 11900 Chillicothe Road in Chester Township. The boutique features hundreds of handcrafted items by more than 35 vendors. Admission is free.

A preview party for adults only will be held Nov. 11 from 7-9:30 p.m. The $5 admission includes preview of the boutique, hors d’oeuvres and wine.

Join the Boutique Bounce on Nov. 11 and 12 by also shopping the boutiques at St. Anselm Church, 11900 Chillicothe Road in Chester, and Old South Church, 9802 Chillicothe Road in Kirtland. Participants will be eligible for one of three grand prizes by attending each boutique, getting a card stamped and turning it in at the last stop. Drawing will be Nov. 13; winners will be notified.

St. Anselm Christmas Boutique

Nov. 12, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

St. Anselm’s Women’s Guild will have their annual Christmas Boutique at St. Anselm Church, 13013 Chillicothe Road in Chester Township.

The boutique features more than 80 area vendors, a snack bar, bake sale and prize raffle.

Admission is $1 and includes one raffle ticket.

Join the Boutique Bounce by also stopping at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Chester Township and Old South Church in Kirtland and be included in a free drawing for a chance to win one of three gift baskets.

Free Fresh Produce

Nov. 12, 9-11 a.m.

Newbury United Community Church, 14961 Auburn Road, will be hosting a fresh produce giveaway. Cleveland FoodBank provides the service to low income Geauga County residents. Please bring ID and bags.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Nov. 12, 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Mayfield United Methodist Church will host a community Thanksgiving dinner in the church’s fellowship hall, 7747 Mayfield Road in Chester Township.

Cost is $10 for ages 11 through adult and $5 for children ages 5-10.

Tickets available at the door. Takeout orders are welcome.

Proceeds will benefit the church outreach ministries.

Pancakes at Hambden Grange

Nov. 13, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Hambden Grange 2482 is serving an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast with maple syrup, corn fritters, fruit, sausage, juice, cocoa and coffee at the Grange located at 9778 Old State Road.

Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.

Veterans Day Memorial

Nov. 13, 2 p.m.

A Veterans Day memorial will be held at the Geauga County Veterans Memorial on Ravenwood Drive, Claridon Township. A speaker and weapons will be provided.

Heroes Of Conservation Awards

Nov. 13, 2:30-5 p.m.

Protect Geauga Parks will host the second annual Geauga Heroes of Conservation awards and reception in the community room of Munson Township Hall, 12210 Auburn Road. The event will feature the presentation of awards, music, poetry and refreshments.

Audubon Clarifies Bird Names

Nov. 15, 7 p.m.

Blackbrook Audubon will meet at Holden Arboretum in Kirtland. Dr. Andy Jones, chair of ornithology and director of science at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will present this “Who Keeps Changing My Field Guide?”

He will discuss why common and scientific names of birds change in new editions of field guides since he is a member of the American Ornithologists’ Union, the organization responsible for bird taxonomy. The presentation is open to all.

Good Samaritan Dinner

Nov. 16, 5-6:30 p.m.

The Burton Congregational Church, UCC, Good Samaritan Dinner will be held at the church on the square in Burton. The cost is $8 for adults, $3 for children ages 4-11 and free for children 3 and under.

The homemade meal consists of an entree, two sides, bread, dessert and beverage. Takeout is available by calling 440-834-4495 the day of the dinner from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds go to meet emergency needs of local families.

Herb Society Meets

Nov. 18, 12:30 p.m.

The Chagrin Valley Herb Society will meet at the Bainbridge Library for refreshments, business meeting and craft. Attendees will make two herbal hand warmers out of old quilts from Jennifer Casa’s book “Vintage Made Modern” and share culinary tools and tips with each other. Bring a needle and thread to the meeting.

Shopping Extravaganza

The Auburn Firedevils, auxiliary to the Auburn Volunteer Fire Department, are hosting their fifth annual arts, crafts and consultants fair at Adam Hall, 11455 Washington St. in Auburn Township.

The hall will be filled with a wide variety of vendors as well as a Chinese auction, food and beverages.

Parkman Feather Party

Nov. 19, 6 p.m.

The Parkman Fire and Rescue Association will hold its annual Feather Party at the Community House in Parkman next to the fire station. Play games for turkeys, hams and stuffed animals. Food and drinks will be available. Questions? Call 440-548-2515.

Audubon Travels To Lorain County

Nov. 20, 8 a.m.

Blackbrook Audubon will visit Sandy Ridge Reservation, 6195 Otten Road in North Ridgeville, to search for winter raptors, resident bald eagles and waterfowl. Sandy Ridge offers wetlands, wet woods, and meadow habitats on a long, but flat trail. Bring binoculars and spotting scopes. For more information, call Pat Morse at 440-256-1404, ext. 2101.

Free Thanksgiving Dinner

Nov. 24, 12-3 p.m.

St. Anselm Church is holding its annual free buffet style Thanksgiving dinner in Kelly Hall located on the church grounds,13013 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township. All are welcome.

iHeart Square Dance

Nov. 27, 6-8 p.m.

Venison for Veterans

Hunters may donate their deer to help feed veterans of Geauga County or anyone can make a donation to help pay for the processing of deer for veterans.

GCRTA Brunch

Dec. 6, 9:45 a.m.

The Geauga County Retired Teachers Association will hold its holiday brunch meeting at The Tanglewood Club, 8745 Tanglewood Trail, Chagrin Falls. Gathering time will be followed by the business meeting at 10 a.m. and a traditional brunch at 10:30 a.m. There will be a 50/50 raffle and free lunch raffle.

Following the meal, Geauga County Park naturalist John Kolar will present “John Muir: Come Home to Nature.”

Cost is $15.40, which includes a $1 donation to the Grant-in-Aid Fund. Reservations required by Nov. 27. Make checks out to GCRTA and mail to: Judy Miller, 17130 Kinsman Road, Middlefield, OH 44062, or call 440-487-4324. Inform Judy of any dietary restrictions.

Consider bringing a newly retired teacher or school personnel to the brunch. Also, bring a donation of canned goods and/or paper products for the Geauga Hunger Task Force.

F.O.E. Ladies Auxiliary Dinners

The Fraternal Order of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary 2261, 317 Water St. in Chardon, hosts Friday Fish Fry dinners every Friday through April 14, except during holiday weeks, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Cost ranges from $7 to $10. Enjoy Lake Erie perch, orange roughy, shrimp or chicken tenders.

The FOE also serves spaghetti dinners every Tuesday through April 12, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
