Geauga Beef and Swine
The Geauga Beef and Swine 4-H Club met Aug. 14 in the school building at the fairgrounds. There were 24 members present. They learned about responsibilities, trustworthiness and how to prepare a market chicken for fair.
The Geauga Country Fair will open Aug. 31 with an 11 a.m. parade, followed by a bicentennial ceremony at noon. There will be two livestock sales this year: small animals on Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. and large animal on Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. Bidding will be available to do online or in person at bwfinaldrive.com.
The next meeting was to setup the beef, swine, lamb and poultry barns for the club space on Aug. 28. Members worked on the barn decorations at the conclusion of the meeting. (Submitted by Kaiden Wolcott, 12, news reporter)
Granny’s Kids
Granny’s Kids 4-H Club met Aug. 28 at the fairgrounds to set up the goat barn and their junior fair booth. The club members invite the public to attend the Great Geauga County Fair. Come see them at the goat barn where the club will be selling goat milk fudge in several flavors. Besides dairy and market goats, members will also be exhibiting market chickens, turkeys, ducks, swine and rabbits, as well as fancy chickens, guinea pigs and pack goats. Look for the design created by of one of its members on the black junior fair T-shirts. Club members will be wearing their new green show shirts.
The fair starts on Aug. 31. This year the auction will be two days long. Rabbits, turkeys, chickens and ducks sell on Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. and swine, goats, lambs and beef sell on Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. The fair will be free on Wednesday and Thursday admission is only $8. Labor Day is Family Day with all day ride bands for only $10.
This year is the celebration of the bicentennial of Ohio’s oldest continuous county fair. Founded in 1823, the Great Geauga Fair is also one of the oldest fairs in the nation. Kids 6 and under are free.
Granny’s Kids Club was one of the 13 clubs to participate in the Greener Fields Club’s food drive. Since 2015, financial donations and items given, including the match from Dr. Augustine Kellis, totaled over $250,000 for the Geauga Hunger Task Force. Approximately 28,907 items were given.
