Taxpayers Asked to Mail Payments to Avoid Lines at Treasury

In early May,  Geauga County Treasurer Chris Hitchcock and county Auditor Chuck Walder submitted application to the Ohio Department of Taxation to extend the second half real estate tax collection deadline two weeks, from July 8 to July 22. Permission was granted May 29.

“COVID-19 is impacting our community in a myriad of ways, including collecting taxes,” Hitchcock said. “As I have learned over the years, every little bit helps and moving the tax collection deadline out, if only for a couple weeks, helps,” he added.

The tax deadline still comes with a state mandated penalty of 10 percent for those who are even a day late, so taxpayers are reminded to make sure their mailed envelope is either postmarked no later than July 22 or is dropped off at the treasury’s night drop on Chardon Square (open 24/7).

“Auditor Walder and I reviewed the concerns a delay of any kind would have on our county and determined a two-week extension would have nominal impact on all local municipalities and schools, Hitchcock said.

Hitchcock noted that due to COVID, taxpayers are asked to “please, please” mail payments and avoid long lines at the treasury.
