Grange Chili Cook-Off

March 16, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Huntsburg Grange’s 21st annual chili cookoff and brown bag raffle will be held in the Huntsburg Community Center, 12406 Madison Road.

Buy a sampler pack for $3 to taste entries and vote for the winner. The event also features live music, 50/50, bingo, bunco, a cake walk and activities for kids.

Burton Book Sale

Stop by after one of the local pancake breakfasts to shop Burton Public Library’s book sale. The entrance to the book sale is at the back of the building located at 14588 W. Park St.

Audubon Talks Maple Syrup

March 19, 7 p.m.

Blackbrook Audubon hosts a presentation on maple sugar production by Geauga Park District Naturalist Karie Wheaton at Big Creek Park, 9160 Robinson Road in Chardon. She will describe the annual tradition of turning sap into maple syrup.

Bring a beverage container to be eligible to participate in the “bring your own mug” raffle.

Master Gardener Volunteer Classes

Geauga County Master Gardener Volunteers (MGV) are offering a variety of free classes in the spring. Each class will be held in the Patterson Center at the Geauga County Extension Office, 14269 Claridon-Troy Road, Burton. Registration is required; call 440-834-4656. “Composting and Vermiculture” is from 6:30-8:30 p.m. March 20.

Held in partnership with Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District, participants will learn composting basics and benefits and a step beyond with vermicomposting. Learn how to avoid common composting problems. Participants will have the chance to win a free kitchen compost pail.

The Gardening 101 series continues with “Seed Selection and Planting Plan” on March 23 from 10 a.m. to noon. MGV Kelly Morgan will cover the basics of selecting and starting seeds, what works best directly planted in the garden and when to start planting.

Then, on April 6 from 10 a.m. to noon, join MGV and botanist Judy Barnhart for “Common Yard & Garden Weeds.” She will discuss and identify unwanted weeds, several of which can become aggressive, noxious or invasive. An ID matching activity will be included.

Woodland Wednesdays

March 20, 6:30 p.m.

The Woodland Wednesdays series continues with Trees for Bees” virtual workshop. The featured speaker is Denise Ellsworth, retired program director, pollinator education, department of entomology, The Ohio State University. Learn about the important relationship between bees and trees and what it means for one’s woods.

Chardon Toastmasters Open House

March 21, 6:30 p.m.

Chardon Toastmasters Club is hosting its annual open house at Munson Township Hall, 12210 Auburn Road. The club has seen many of its members grow their public speaking and leadership skills both professionally and personally since 2002. Current members are a diverse group from Geauga, Lake and Ashtabula counties. Refreshments will be served.

Geauga Home and Garden Show

The 17th annual premiere home and garden show takes place at Heritage Marketplace, 15848 Nauvoo Road in Middlefield. Showtimes are Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 440-632-0174 for information.

Indoor Flea Market

April 6, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Munson Township’s indoor flea market will be held at the Munson Town Hall and Fire Station Bay, 12210 Auburn Road. The $1 entrance fee for shoppers will go toward the Munson Township Scholarship Fund. Youth 12 and under are free.

Red Wagon Spring Dinner

April 10, 4:30-8 p.m.

The Christ Child Society of Geauga County is holding its 31st annual Red Wagon spring fundraiser dinner, raffles and auction at St. Noel Banquet Center in Willoughby Hills. Guest emcee is Jen Harcher, Channel 8 meteorologist.

The event supports the many programs and activities of the Society that has served at risk children in Geauga for over 40 years.
