Just For Seniors

Geauga Park District’s Senior Days have been rebranded as “Elderberries: Seniors Ripe for Adventure!” Registration is required for any of the following Elderberries programs, co-presented by Geauga Park District, the Geauga Department on Aging and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center.

Wildlife in Winter

Jan. 18, 1-2:30 p.m.

The West Woods Nature Center

There’s high drama going on out there in the woods, wetlands and fields, a struggle for survival against winter, predators and starvation. The indoor presentation will be based on observation and stories written in the snow like pages in a book. Refreshments provided.

Snowbelted

Feb. 15, 1-2:30 p.m.

The West Woods Nature Center

Join for a look back at whopping winter weather events of the past with an illustrated presentation intended to touch off a blizzard of audience memories. Refreshments provided.

A Sweet Treat from the Trees

March 15, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Swine Creek Reservation

Discover the secrets of pure Geauga Gold … maple syrup. Enjoy lunch in the lodge at 11:30 a.m., and then take a hands-on look at the sugarbush and sugar house to learn about the maple sugaring process.

Naturalists also lead Geauga Walkers hikes of active seniors throughout Geauga Park District year-round, usually a couple Tuesdays a month from 1-2:30 p.m. Hikes this season are: Jan. 16 at The West Woods, Jan. 30 at Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve, Feb. 13 at Big Creek Park, Feb. 27 at Beartown Lakes Reservation, March 13 at Swine Creek Reservation and March 27 at Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve.

Registration is not required for Geauga Walkers hikes. Call 440-279-0880 if the temperature is below 20 to ensure that the hike is still a go. For the season’s complete Geauga Walkers schedule, please call Geauga Senior Center at 440-279-2137.

Park District Van Trips

Geauga Park District will drive participants to see some awesome regional spots outside Geauga County parks, all official Nature’s-Not-to-Be-Missed opportunities.

Lake Erie Winter Van Trip

Jan. 20, 12-4 p.m.

The West Woods

Explore the frozen shores of beautiful Lake Erie for ice formations, snow and hardy winter birds. Locations will be determined by what’s going on that week along the shores, but could include Mentor Headlands, Edgewater Park and Neff Road Park. Participants should be able to hike several miles and be dressed and prepared for cold and strong wings. Please bring a snack and water.

Winter Hawk Watch Van Trip

Feb. 3, 10 a.m. to noon or 1-3 p.m.

Swine Creek Reservation

Take a birding adventure into Amish farmland for raptors including rough-legged hawks, harriers and kestrels, as well as horned larks, snow buntings, lapland longspurs and other winter birds of open country. Bring binoculars. Not wheelchair accessible.
