Call for Artists: “On the Wing … Nature That Takes Flight”
Artists are invited to participate in the park district’s upcoming community art show, “On the Wing … Nature That Takes Flight,” on display at The West Woods Nature Center from March 28 through July 26.
Artist applications must be submitted online; walk-in applications and paper forms will not be accepted. The online application will be available Feb. 12 through March 12 on the park district website under Activities, then Special Events & Art Shows. Photos of artwork must be submitted with the application.
The biennial show will feature artwork inspired by wildlife that flies, with the theme occupying at least two-thirds of each submission. Acceptable interpretations include birds, insects and other airborne wildlife, whether depicted in flight or at rest.
A variety of media will be accepted, including drawing, painting and photography, along with a youth category for artists ages 12 and younger. Artists may submit up to two entries. Rules and entry guidelines are posted on the website.

Call for Entries: Nature Writing Contest
Geauga Park District is now accepting entries into its 31st annual Nature Writing Contest – nature-inspired poetry and prose by creative writers of any age.
Download a contest application from the park district website under News & Updates or pick one up at The West Woods Nature Center, Big Creek Park’s Meyer Center or any in-county library.
To enter, applications are due by email (preferred) or mail no later than Earth Day, April 22. Three age categories divide writers by adult 18 and older, adolescent ages 12–17 and child ages 11 and under, with separate divisions for poetry and prose.
Contest winners will earn cash prizes; an invitation to a special celebration July 8 at Claridon Woodlands; publication in the annual winners chapbook and on the park district website; and recognition in the park district’s summer activity guide.

Winter At Observatory Park
Open daily 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. through Memorial Day, Observatory Park in Montville Township will soon feature a total lunar eclipse on March 3, from 4:30-6:30 a.m., with Earth’s shadow completely blocking the moon by 6 a.m. The view will be over when the moon sets around 6:30 a.m.; come out before work to start the day right by enjoying the show with “Astro-Nat” Chris Mentrek and park telescopes.
Astronomy-themed drop-in programs include: Make a Spectroscope on Feb. 13 and/or Birds in Space on March 13, both from 7-8 p.m. The programs will also be presented virtually on Feb. 27 and March 27, respectively, for those who register ahead of time to get the link via email.
A naturalist-led hike of 1.5 miles over level terrain during the full sap moon is scheduled for March 2, from 6-7 p.m. “Astro-Nat” Chris will his dynamic Sky Tonight Planetarium Shows inside the Robert McCullough Science Center on Feb. 14 and March 28, from 4-5 p.m.
And finally, walk-up guided night sky viewings at Observatory Park’s main entrance at 10610 Clay St. are scheduled for on Feb. 13 and 27, March 13 and 27, from 8-11 p.m. and on Feb 14, March 14 and 28, from 7 to 11 p.m.
Just north at 10350 Clay Street, a special night sky viewing at Nassau Astronomical Station, with views seen through the giant historic Nassau telescope, will also be offered Feb. 28, from 7-11 p.m. If skies are cloudy, all Observatory Park night sky viewings will transition to planetarium presentations at the Robert McCullough Science Center.
