Loonacy: Loons in Life, Legend & Local Waters 

April 14, 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Bass Lake Preserve

Learn about the amazing aquatic abilities, ecology, lore and conservation issues of this iconic bird of the North Woods. Outdoor viewing of migratory common loons follows. Bring binoculars; spotting scope provided.

Warbler Warm-Up

April 14, 3:30-5 p.m.

The West Woods

Noted local birders Matt Valencic and Kelly Kozlowski present techniques for identifying spring warblers using color patterns, habitat, behaviors and song. For novice to intermediate birders, handouts will be provided. Walk follows to find early songbird migrants. A collaboration with the Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland.

Snipe Hunt & Woodcock Watch

April 18, 7:30-9 p.m.

Frohring Meadows

Witness the aerial courtship displays of Wilson’s snipe and American woodcock, two memorable rites of spring.

Nature Trek Fitness Hike

April 20, 10 a.m. to noon

The West Woods

Burn off winter calories on a fitness hike with outdoor recreation specialist Trevor Wearstler while learning some cool facts about Geauga County nature along the way. Participants should have the ability to hike at least three miles over hilly terrain. Bring water. Held rain or shine, registration is not required.

Advanced Nature Craft: Build a Box Turtle

April 20, 1-3:30 p.m.

The West Woods Nature Center

Meet Mikey the Box Turtle and learn some amazing facts about him with a brief presentation. Then cut, fold and glue a paper craft turtle. This high-level craft creates a 3-D life-sized turtle for participants to enjoy. Registration required; ages 10 and older.

Spring Birding

Continuing a Greater Cleveland tradition since 1933, the annual Spring Bird Walk Series returns for six walks throughout April and May – April 14 at Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve, April 21 at Frohring Meadows, April 28 at The Rookery, May 5 at Eldon Russell Park, May 12 at Big Creek Park and May 19 at Swine Creek Reservation.

All are Sundays from 7:30-9:30 a.m. and among the naturalist staff’s Nature’s Not to Be Missed opportunities.

Located where there is the best bet for birds at each particular stage in migration, the walks connect experienced bird watchers with novices of all ages for bird observation, identification and interpretation.

Bring a bird guide and binoculars if available. Registration is not required.
