Out On The Water

The park district is pleased to offer free kayak and canoe borrowing at its Headwaters Park Boathouse beginning June 2, allowing Geauga County residents to borrow a kayak free of charge all summer long.

For those wanting to get some experience on the water before taking a boat out their own, naturalists will offer classes on June 8 at Bass Lake Preserve for ages 10 and up with an adult: Basic Learn to Kayak from 9 a.m. to noon and Basic Learn to Canoe from 1-4 p.m. Required registration by phone is now open.

Registration is also open by phone only at 440-279-0880 for the Jungle Bird Canoe Safari on June 2, from 1-3 p.m., at Eldon Russell Park. Discover why the Upper Cuyahoga River is designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society, and the meaning of our Nature’s Not to Be Missed programming.

Bring binoculars or borrow a pair of the park district’s to use. Canoeing paddling skills are expected of participants, who must be at least 10 years old.

Nights Out In The Parks

The free evening series features three outdoor movies and four scenic amphitheater shows.

Observatory Park hosts all three movies, shown on a giant inflatable screen under internationally recognized dark skies. Bring blankets and lawn chairs and plot out aplace on the grass. Themed activities and free popcorn and lemonade begin at 8 p.m., and each film starts at dark. Geauga County Public Library’s Fun Bus is also on hand.

The season’s movies will be “Ralph Breaks the Internet” on June 22, “Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone” on July 27 and “First Man” on Aug. 10.

As for live music, the performances have been divided between Big Creek Park’s Frances S. Hall Amphitheater and the great outdoor pavilion at Claridon Woodlands, all from 7-8:30 p.m.: Jayson & the Mean Eyed Catson June 8 at Big Creek Park; Foster Brown & Friendson July 6 at Claridon Woodlands; Tom Todd on July 20 at Big Creek Park; and Night Dawgson Aug. 24 at Big Creek Park.

Outdoor Adventure Camps

Geauga Park District’s seventh annual camps are being offered in weeklong form for youth entering grades 5-7 the weeks of June 10, July 8, July 15, July 29 and Aug. 5. The week of June 24, a Junior Naturalist Camp for this age group, will also direct the focus to streams, lakes and forests for discovery of insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, astronomy and more.

For teens entering grades 8-10, weeklong experiences will be the weeks of June 17 and July 22. Both weeks will include the popular high ropes course fun at Claridon Woodlands. Plus, single-day “X-Treme Adventures” will be held July 1 (the all-new Wilderness Skills), July 2 (Kayak Challenge), July 3 (Natural History) and July 5 (Adventure Day, which includes the high ropes course).
